Homes were evacuated, cars submerged and a canal collapsed as rivers burst their banks around the region flooding nearby fields and streets.

Dramatic footage of the blaze and thick plumes of black smoke have been shared online, with images and videos showing flames behind a retail premises.

Emergency services were called to the site of the blaze at the Assheton Arms Hotel in Middleton at around 12.15am.
